Sunday afternoon the NCAA Baseball Tournament began to take form as the host sites for next weekend regional sites were announced. LSU was picked to host its 20th regional tournament and that means more baseball at the Box.
It was no surprise that LSU was selected, but there was one. Heading into the SEC tournament five teams were ranked in the top-16 in most major polls and RPI, but only three teams will host (LSU, South Carolina and Florida). The real surprise was Kentucky and to some degree Arkansas left off. Arkansas is ranked inside the top-16 in every major poll except Baseball American (25) and has the 16th highest RPI.
Kentucky has the 19th highest RPI and out of the four major polls its lowest ranking is 13th (Collegiate Baseball). As of a few weeks ago Kentucky was in the conversation of being a top-eight seed, but instead will have to wait on Monday to see where they are traveling.
On a positive note the three SEC teams selected are almost assured that they will earn a top-eight seed and will not have to travel. This is great for the conference to earn its fourth consecutive national championship.
The ACC were honored with five selections (Florida St, Virginia, North Carolina, North Carolina St and Miami). The PAC-12 had four selected (Oregon, Arizona, UCLA and Stanford). The Big-12 had two (Texas A&M and Baylor). The last selections went to Rice and Big Ten Champ Purdue.
The top-eight national seeds plus the remaining 64-team bracket will be completed tomorrow afternoon.
