Tuesday Night, Kevin Gausman became an instant millionaire. Gasuman was drafted fourth by the Baltimore Orioles in the opening round of the MLB draft.
What the Orioles are getting is with out question the most-MLB ready pitcher in the draft. Yea my opinion is probable bias, but like most LSU fans I have followed Gasuman’s development since he was a freshman.
As a true freshman, Gausman tried to dominate opponents with his mid-90 mph fastball and really had not developed other pitches. This year he has added a dominant change-up and a solid breaking pitch. Because of these improvements, Gausman is on pace to having one of the best single-season pitching performances in LSU history. Here is his year to date stats on the season.
The numbers speak for themselves, but what is more impressive is his consistency. All season he has gone deep into each of his starts and helped keep the bullpen rested for the remainder of the weekend outings. The difference from his freshman to sophomore year shows that he still has plenty of room to develop and MLB teams drool over that notion.
More impressive than his consistency is his stamina. Gausman looks like he is only getting stronger the longer the season goes. In his last four starts, all the teams he faced made it to regional play (South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and Oregon State) and two of them advanced to the super regionals (South Carolina and Vanderbilt). Here are his stats from those four games.
With exceptions to his strikeout rate, he has improved every single stat against the best competition. If LSU continues to win and Gausman can throw three more average outings, he will go down with the greatest regular season. Don’t believe me? With all this talk about what the Orioles are getting, Gausman is going to a great situation. Baltimore is currently a team turning it around and is making some serious noise in the AL east. The Orioles are desperate for depth in their rotation, so Gausman will be on the fast track to the show. Finally, Gausman is going to sport the sweetest lid in the Majors…which in my opinion is a bid deal.
