The preseason American Press College Football poll was released on Saturday and with the dismissal of star defensive back, Tyrann Mathieu, the LSU Tigers did not find themselves at the top of the polls.
LSU received 16 first place votes out of a total of 60, putting them at number three in the preseason poll. Southern California was voted the AP’s preseason number one team receiving 25 first place votes. Alabama came in at number 2 in the polls receiving 17 first place votes. While Oklahoma and Michigan each received one preseason number one vote as well.
Five of the six SEC ranked teams are within the top 10. Georgia (6), South Carolina (9), and Arkansas at number 10. Florida received just enough to sneak into the preseason top 25 coming in at number 23.
This marks the 4th time in Coach Les Miles’ tenure that the Tigers have been ranked in the preseason AP top 5. 2005, 2007, and 2011 are the other three years. In each of those seasons the Tigers went on to reach the SEC Championship game in Atlanta.
For the Tigers to keep that streak alive it will almost certainly need to beat number two Alabama when the Crimson Tide visit Tiger Stadium in November.
