The schedule said New York Giants at Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon, but for LSU fans that meant a chance to see two of their former wide receivers in Brandon LaFell of Carolina and Reuben Randle from the Giants.
Randle was the Giant’s leading receiver with two receptions and 50 yards on four targets, but it was LaFell who claimed bragging rights in the Panther’s 38-0 win at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte after he had two touchdowns. LaFell finished with 53 yards on three receptions giving him his first multi-touchdown game in his NFL career.
The former third round pick in 2010 has had a quiet start to the season with only four receptions for 13 yards entering Sunday’s game. Panther’s fans have seen this before though as he has battled inconsistency his entire pro career, but maybe this is the game he needed to jump start his season and career.
Conversely, the Giants’ second round pick of a season ago outgained the combined yardage of his superstar teammates Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks and produced his first career 100-yard game this season in the opener. However, the Giants are 0-3 and staring up at the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East.
The two former LSU wide receivers likely will be joined by a couple more in Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham, Jr after this season and add to the high number of LSU alumni in the NFL.
