Redshirt freshman quarterback, Jameis Winston is not only a phenom at the game’s most important position on the field for the Florida State Seminoles, but the budding star is also developing into a key factor in the recruitment of five-star receiver Malachi Dupre.
Winston texted the 6-2.5, 187-pound New Orleans native earlier this week and the message really took Dupre aback.
“Man, that was unexpected,” Dupre said of the impromptu text from Winston. “I’ve met him and talked to him before, but it (the texts) was random and out of the blue, really…But after talking to him he’s very, very cool. He was telling me about how life is at FSU and how he sees me coming there and being a power,” Dupre added. “He said I’m a great athlete. He basically told me he’s watching and to keep working.”
Dupre is the No. 1 ranked receiver in the 247Sports composite rankings and is considered a strong LSU lean. However, with the potential Heisman trophy invitee striking up a relationship with the John Curtis standout could the Seminoles make considerable headway in the pursuit of Dupre?
Of course it can. Wide receivers want to go to a situation where they can get the ball and put up big numbers and that is the case for Dupre who has all the skills in the world but plays in an option offense where his skills aren’t displayed as often as they would be in a pass-first offense. The opportunity to go to FSU and be the recipient of passes from Winston–who may enter 2014 as the Heisman front-runner–is a heckuva recruiting pitch.
LSU will be breaking in a new starter at quarterback next season after Zach Mettenberger heads to the NFL and whether it’s Hayden Rettig, Anthony Jennings or four-star commit Brandon Harris, neither will have the gravitas that Winston has when he gets him on the phone.
Certainly more factors are in play during a player’s recruitment like his relationship with the coaches, proximity from home and the depth chart, but it certainly helps to have a potential Heisman winner and No. 1 pick in the NFL draft telling how great you can be at FSU.
Dupre will take his official visits after his high school season ends and make his decision on national signing day. His top suitors besides LSU and Florida State include UCLA which will get an official and Ole Miss, Alabama and Auburn who are vying for his final two officials.
The crystal ball predictions on 247 for Dupre are still 100% in favor of LSU, but expect that to fluctuate later this winter when he embarks on his visits and Winston continues to blows up his phone.
