LSU did not come into the game against Florida with the intentions of airing it out. Florida has an incredible secondary, and LSU was not planning on testing it. Zach Mettenberger only threw the ball 17 times, completing just 9 of them. His nine completions were good for 152 yards.
Grade for Zach Mettenberger: C
The Florida defense is easily one of the best in the country. Les Miles was knew the importance of establishing the running game early and often. Mettenber’s number was not called often. The Tigers only threw the ball on 30% of their snaps.
With the lack of passes Mettenberger was throwing, he was not able to get in a rhythm and missed several throws he normally completes. Mettenberger only completed 53% of his passes. In his defense there were a couple of uncharacteristic drops by some of his receivers.
Mettenberger did not throw an interception, snapping Florida streak at eight straight games with at least one interception. However he did extend Florida’s streak of games with at least one takeaway to 17. Early in the second quarter, Mettenberger led the Tigers to the Florida 29, but the ball slipped out of his hand as he dropped back to pass. Leon Orr recovered the fumble for Florida.
Mettenberger is lucky that the fumble didn’t prove costly. The fumble halted a probable scoring drive in a game where points were at a premium.
Mettenberger gets a grade of a C due to a couple poor throws and his fumble. His performance is nothing to be worried about. The Tigers will be playing the Ole Miss Rebels next week a team with a banged up defense. Expect the coaching staff to allow Mettenberger to air it out.
