Zach Mettenberger NFL draft stock was a foreign concept entering his redshird senior season with LSU after a rather underwhelming 2012 season, but seven games into his senior season, Mettenberger’s NFL draft stock is seeing a meteoric rise.
Entering the season he was viewed as a late round option but halfway through this season Mel Kiper has him as the 5th quarterback on his draft board and ahead of high-profile quarterbacks AJ McCarron and Tajh Boyd among others.
“Has thrived under Cam Cameron, and shows off an ability to anticipate. Better weapons have helped his development, Kiper said.”
Mettenberger ranks 8th in the NCAA with 1,890 yards which is more than Teddy Bridgewater, Marcus Mariota, Brett Hundley and Johnny Manziel who are all ranked ahead of him according to Kiper. His 10.9 yards-per-attempt ranks third in the nation at 10.9 and ranks 4th in quarterback rating.
Kiper’s colleague at ESPN, Todd McShay ranks Mettenberger as the 6th best quarterback prospect, but only the 48th best overall player. By comparison, he views Bridgewater, Mariota and Hundley as top-seven players.
CBS Sports ranks Mettenberger as the 6th best quarterback as well and project him to be drafted between the first and second rounds.
With so many great quarterbacks eligible for the 2014 NFL draft it may be tough for Mettenberger to crack the first round because of many NFL teams thinking they can draft another position in the first round knowing the position is so deep they can wait until the second round.
Nevertheless, the work Mettenberger has done in the film room and on-the-field, he has put himself to be among the first signal-callers to hear his name called during May’s draft. That’s not something even the most optimistic LSU fan could have envisioned this time a year ago.
With marquee matchups at Alabama and vs. Texas A&M on the schedule and a potential SEC Championship Game and BCS National Championship Game allows him the opportunity to see his draft stock rise even more in the next two months.
