Former LSU All-American defensive end, Sam Montgomery was waived by the Houston Texans for a violation of team rules according to the Houston Chronicle. Montgomery did not play a single snap for the Texans this season after they took him in the third round of the NFL draft.

UPDATE 11:00p.m. ET: Pot reason Texans cut Sam Montgomery, two others

Montgomery left LSU for the NFL draft after his junior season that saw his production take a dip across the board from his sophomore season. As a sophomore, Montgomery had 49 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and nine sacks. As a junior, those numbers dropped to 37, 13 and eight.

Despite the dip in production he was still widely viewed as a potential first round pick, but he dropped to the 95th pick after he made waves at the NFL draft combine when he admitted to not giving a full effort every week.

"“You know, some weeks when we didn’t have to play the harder teams, there were some times when effort was not needed,” Montgomery said. “But when we had the big boys coming in, the [Alabamas] or the South Carolinas, I grabbed close to those guys and went all out.” [Source: CBSSports]"

Montgomery is a talented player and his maturity has been a question dating back to his time at LSU, but he’ll likely find himself on another NFL roster very soon. 6’3, 262-pound defensive ends who can get to the passer don’t remain unemployed very long even if they are knuckleheads.

For the Texans he was a wasted third round pick, but hopefully for Montgomery he can grow up so he’s not a wasted talent.
