LSU freshman , Jordan Mickey has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week after the 6’8” forward averaged 12 points per game, 11.5 rebounds per game and 5.5 blocks per game for the 1-1 Tigers. Mickey is the first LSU freshman to win the award since Storm Warren in November of 2009.
Mickey, an Arlington, Texas native was the No. 8 power forward recruit out of according to the 247Sports composite rankings and was the second highest ranked recruit in LSU”s class behind power forward Jarrell Martin. With the injury to Martin in the first minute of his college career, Mickey has risen to the occasion and leads the team with 34 minutes per game.
He is a big reason why LSU leads the nation in rebounds per game with 53.5 through their first two games of the season, and has produced a double double in each of his two college games against UMASS and Northwestern State. Mickey, combined with potential first round NBA draft pick, Johnny O’Bryant III to give the Tigers a formidable front court.
Could this be the best front court since Tyrus Thomas and Glenn “Big Baby” Davis at LSU?
Coach Jones says Jordan Mickey reminds him of Tyrus Thomas with his shot blocking ability.

Only time will tell if they can anywhere near as successful as that duo who helped lead LSU to the Final Four in the 2005-2006 season, but Mickey after bieng named Freshman of the Week is off to a great start alongside the reliable O’Bryant.
