After making it to Omaha last season, the LSU baseball team is ranked no. 3 in the Collegiate Baseball Preseason Polls for the 2014 season. The Tigers had the best winning percentage in the nation last season (57-11, .838). They won the SEC Tournament, their regional, and then beat Oklahoma in their Super Regional in Baton Rouge to advance to the College World Series.

LSU is one of three SEC teams in the top ten and one of eight in the top thirty. SEC Teams in the top 30 include: No. 2 Mississippi State, No. 3 LSU, No. 9 Vanderbilt, No. 14 South Carolina, No. 16 Florida, No. 25 Texas A&M, No. 29 Alabama, and No. 30 Ole Miss.

LSU returns 18 letterman from last year’s squad, including nine position players and nine pitchers. The Tiger veterans will be joined by 19 new faces that make up the No. 6 recruiting class according to the Perfect Game recruiting rankings.

The 2014 LSU baseball season will commence February 14 versus New Orleans in Alex Box Stadium.

According to lsusports.net, head coach Paul Mainieri was proud of the ranking, but isn’t taking anything for granted.

It’s a significant honor any time our program is recognized with such a high ranking, but we realize we have a lot of work to do before the season opener.

We’re very encouraged by the intensity and energy that our team has displayed. The fall practice period revealed a lot about our players, and it gives us strong momentum heading into preseason practice in January. We’ve learned a lot about the players that can play significant roles for us this spring, and I’m very pleased with the work ethic and chemistry developing within the squad. I think our fans will enjoy watching a very talented and dynamic group of Tigers in 2014.
