LSU managed to get through the long gap between the end of the regular season and the Outback bowl with very little off-the-field drama, but on the eve of the game in Tampa, Fla against the Iowa Hawkeyes, but it’s being reported that star defensive tackle Ego Ferguson did not travel with the team.

Ferguson has been the team’s best defensive tackle all season long, outplaying the much-hyped Anthony Johnson and was counted on being a big factor in the bowl game against the run-oriented Hawkeyes led by the powerful Mark Weisman.

However, LSU will be forced to play without their best run-stuffer and that could spell trouble for the Tigers front seven. True freshman Christian LaCouture is likely to replace him in the starting lineup with Quentin Thomas seeing extensive action as well.

This was supposed to be a big opportunity for Ferguson to cement his status as a late-first or early-second round pick in the NFL draft as he was expected to declare for the draft after his junior season. There was a chance he could have been the first LSU player drafted.

LSU will have an official comment prior to the noon kickoff tomorrow, but no matter the reason for his not being in Tampa with his teammates, it’s a blow to the defense that was counting on him.
