LSU was able to control the game against the Vanderbilt Commodores from start to finish, resulting in an 81-58 victory for the Tigers over the ‘Dores. The win moves LSU up to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in SEC play.
Johnny Jones’ club took command of the game early building a 10 point lead at the half as they erased the bad memory of their overtime loss from Ole Miss earlier in the week. The Tigers led 35-25 after the first 20 minutes.
In the second frame, however, LSU would pour it on and after the end of regulation the Tigers won in a rout over a team that was coming off an impressive win over the Missouri Tigers.
Johnny O’Bryant was absolutely sensational for LSU. The junior forward was a force all night scoring 22 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. He missed his first two free throws, but went on to make 11 of his next 12, to finish the game 11 for 14 from the charity stripe.
Rebounding was the difference in the game as LSU outrebounded Vanderbilt 48 to 25. The Tigers looked completely dominant down low throughout the game, making many short shot attempts and pulling down tough boards.
Rod Odom was one of the few bright spots for the Commodores as he shot 60% from the field and 80% from the free throw line and finished with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals to lead the team in every category.
LSU will attempt to build on their victory when they face the Missouri Tigers in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center January 21, at 6:00 CT.
