The LSU Tigers offered five-star defensive end Josh Sweat (Chesapeake, Va. Oscar Smith) today. The 6-5, 230-pound five-star prospect is the No. 10 recruit and the No. 1 weakside defensive end according to 247Sports and had 94 tackles and 22 sacks as a junior.
The 247Sports Composite Rankings which is an algorithm that weighs the rankings and grades of all the major recruiting websites has Sweat as the No. 34 recruit overall and the No. 4 player at his position.
With 4.7 speed in the 40-yard dash, Sweat is one of the more explosive players in the entire nation with a lightning quick first step and closing speed that helped him rack up more than 20 sacks as a junior.
He reminds me of 2014 LSU target and Georgia commit Lorenzo Carter with their ability to rush the quarterback off the edge. Sweat may not be as athletic as Carter and a tick slower in the 40, but his skill-set as a pass-rusher is nearly unrivaled in this class.
The local Virginia Tech Hokies are the only program to have Sweat on campus so far and the Hokies are believed to be the early team to beat for Sweat. He holds offers from Florida State, Clemson, Ohio State, North Carolina and Tennessee, among others. But Sweat says he is wide open to schools and doesn’t have any early favorites.
Look for Sweat to make the rounds to as many camps he can get to this summer with the five aforementioned teams in position to get him on campus. The chase for Sweat is just getting underway, but look for LSU to make a big push for him with defensive line coach Brick Haley serving as his primary recruiter and try to get him to come for the LSU spring game.
LSU already has one commitment from a weakside defensive end when Isaiah Washington committed to LSU last weekend and own the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation according to 247Sports.
