A second LSU football assistant turned down a job from another program this week.

Earlier this week, it was reported that LSU football wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph turned down an opportunity to join Nebraska’s coaching staff.

Joseph wasn’t the only LSU assistant to turn down an offer from another coaching staff this week.

Tigers cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond reportedly turned down a chance to join Jimbo Fisher’s staff at Texas A&M on Saturday.

This isn’t a surprise at all to me. In fact, I’m a bit surprised Texas A&M seriously pursued Raymond for a lateral move.

Raymond, who is a Louisiana native, played college football at LSU. He’s been on the Tigers’ coaching staff since 2012 (he also spent three seasons as an intern/assistant strength coach at LSU from 2006-08….Jimbo Fisher was also at LSU in 2006). He’s as LSU as it gets.

I certainly don’t blame Jimbo for shooting his shot. But he had to know he didn’t stand a chance at swiping Raymond from Ed Orgeron’s staff.

Why would Raymond leave?

I mean, maybe if it’s for a promotion. But he’s definitely not leaving for a lateral move.

Plus, there’s still a chance that Raymond could be promoted to defensive coordinator at LSU. Dave Aranda’s departure created an opening, and Raymond is certainly capable of filling it.

If Coach O wants some continuity on his defense, he could strongly consider promoting Raymond.

But even if he doesn’t, Raymond is still better off staying in his home state with the national champions.
