Will LSU football get to play in 2020?

LSU football, and the rest of the college football world, has no idea if the 2020 season is going to happen or not.

But after a wild Monday that had folks expecting the cancelation of the season at any moment, it appears that every attempt will be made to play football this season (at least the SEC).

Ultimately, it depends on how well the coronavirus pandemic can be contained by each program.

And we have no idea how that will go until fall practice starts…and games, of course.

Fortunately for fans, LSU is one of the programs taking the right approach to the 2020 season. That much was evident in athletic director Scott Woodward’s statement on Monday.

LSU football is taking the right approach to the 2020 season

In the midst of the craziness on Monday, Woodward put out a statement that made it clear the Tigers are committed to trying their best to play (safely) in 2020.

And it’s not because of the revenue, it’s because Woodward knows the players want to play and he feels like LSU owes it to them to do their best to make the 2020 season happen.

“As we have said since the beginning, we are patiently working through each and every variable following the direction of our Return to Safety and Medical Guidance Task Force. I believe our student-athletes want to play. We owe it to them to make every effort to do so safely.” said Woodward in his statement.

This is 100 percent the right approach by LSU. The season, if it happens, obviously needs to be as safe as possible for the student-athletes and coaches.

But it’s important to remember that this decision needs to be all about the players. The money, the perception, the opinions of national analysts, none of that should be a factor. It’s about the kids who are the ones actually playing on Saturdays.

It’s clear from the #wewanttoplay hashtag that student-athletes want to play.

LSU gets it. And that’s one of the many reasons so many recruits are eager to land in Baton Rouge.
