Speaking of history, 2015 saw Leonard Fournette become just the 10th FBS running back ever to rush for over 1,000 yards in his first five games. The run that put him over that mark was an 87-yard touchdown run against South Carolina. The Tigers, unable to separate themselves from the Gamecocks much in the first half, went right to Fournette to open the second half, who gave them a two-touchdown lead that eventually led to a 45-24 victory.
The run, believe it or not, was not the longest of Fournette’s career. His longest came in last year’s Music City Bowl loss to Notre Dame, when he broke through the line of scrimmage for an 89-yard touchdown. Even better than his run in the win over the South Carolina was his gesture following the game. In his postgame interview, he announced that he would auction off his game-worn jersey to benefit the recovery effort in South Carolina, where the game was supposed to be played until a historic flood pushed the game to Baton Rouge. Such a gesture by Fournette is a good reminder to players and fans that sometimes, sport can be bigger than the game itself.
