LSU football: Top 5 Quarterbacks of All-Time
By Crissy Froyd
JaMarcus Russell may be considered one of the biggest NFL busts of all time, but his college career was nothing similar.
Russell proved to be mobile when needed to buy time for his receivers, and had the arm strength and accuracy to make the deep throw into the seams. He was a commanding leader, and was able to stand tall in the pocket, even under heavy pressure.
At LSU, Russell played for two seasons, from 2004-2006. Russell kicked off his career as a redshirt sophomore, helping lead the team to an 11-2 record. He was sidelined by an injury late in the season, but made a successful return in 2006.
In his senior season, Russell led LSU to an 11-2 record once more, throwing for 3,129 yards, 28 touchdowns, and only 8 interceptions. Russell and the Tigers defeated the Notre Dame at the Sugar Bowl that season, which helped Russell to be selected as the No. 1 overall pick by the Oakland Raiders in the 2007 NFL Draft.
On his career, Russell threw for a total of 6,625 yards, 52 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions. He went 25-4 overall as a starter, and also received an honorable mention on the AP’s All-SEC team.
