LSU Football: A Tiger Fan’s Christmas in July Wish List
The SEC Championship
LSU football failed to reach the SEC Championship in Atlanta, which was created in 1992, in the first nine years of the game’s existence.
Then Nick Saban arrived in Baton Rouge, and led the Tigers to their first SEC Championship appearance and win in 2001, with a 31-20 victory over Tennessee.
From 2001 to 2011, the Tigers appeared in five SEC title games, winning four times (’01, ’03, ’07 & ’11). Since 2011, LSU has watched Alabama (’12, ’14 & ’15) and Auburn (’13) represent the SEC West in Atlanta.
To reach the College Football Playoff, a team usually must win its conference. Gone are the BCS era days where a team (*cough* Alabama *cough*) can fail to win its own division and still play in the national championship.
Because the SEC Champion will almost always be granted a spot in the four-team College Football Playoff, the road to the CFP runs through Atlanta.
LSU football fans want hardware, and adding another SEC Championship title to the Tigers’ trophy case is near the top of every Tiger fan’s wish list.
