The National Championship

Ever since Nick Saban and LSU ended the 45-year championship drought and hoisted the BCS National Championship trophy in 2003, the standards for football in Baton Rouge have changed.

And that’s a good thing.

After enduring mediocrity throughout the 1990s, LSU football fans have come to expect greatness from their Bayou Bengals. The Tigers won the BCS National Championship in 2003 and 2007, becoming the first program to win multiple titles in the BCS era. LSU returned to the national title game four years later in 2011, but failed to cap off its perfect season, losing to Alabama 21-0 in New Orleans.

The bitter taste of that dreadful 2012 January title game loss still lingers in the mouths of every LSU football fan.

The ultimate poetic justice for Tiger fans would be for LSU to exorcise the Alabama demons by defeating the Crimson Tide in another national title game. In the new world of the College Football Playoff, it’s not inconceivable to imagine two teams from the SEC to make the CFP, especially if one is undefeated and the other’s one-loss is to the aforementioned undefeated squad.

Although defeating Alabama to win the program’s fourth national title would be an incredible triumph, most LSU football fans probably don’t care which team the Tigers would beat.

A national championship is at the top of every LSU fan’s wish list, and if the Tigers cannot achieve that this season, then when will it happen?
