LSU football fans have not been happy with an 8 point loss to Florida, and they have every reason not to be happy with… but should we really be talking about firing him already?

LSU football has high expectations every year, as we should. It is never easy to watch a team loaded with NFL caliber lose to a team you felt like you should beat. The frustration is warranted. But calling for Coach Orgeron to be fired? That is misplaced.

Sure, in the game, there was some uninspired calls and moments where he was straight up out coached. But keep in mind he was going up against one of the top tier coaches in the SEC, whether you want to admit it or not. It isn’t an excuse. It isn’t a pass. But I do want to push one word:

PATIENCE.

One of the hardest words for sports fan, that’s what we need in Baton Rouge. Ed Orgeron, with little to no head coaching experience, has one full season with the Tigers under his belt. He is trying to rebuild, yes rebuild, a Tiger squad that was not in good shape when he got them. After firing Les Miles in the middle of the season, this team was in disarray. Anything from AD to coaches, was all in question. Then met with tons of disappointment, Ed Orgeron was named head coach. He did not come in to the prettiest of situations, and that has to be known, whether it is an easy pill to swallow or not.

In 2017, this team lost to a Sun Belt team. This was not a team that could come in and just win. There was no quarterback, there was a battered offensive line, and an incompetent defensive coordinator. And that is being nice.

Since Coach O has taken over full time, the offensive is as good as it has been in years, we have a quarterback, we have a coach that is winning in recruiting, we have a true Tiger team. But even with Joe Burrow under center, he joined in the summer. After the spring practice, the spring game, all of that. The offense is new, the schemes on defense are new, this is a new and young team. Learning curves are real. Look at UCLA, Nebraska, Florida State, and Mississippi State… all with heavy expectations and NFL talent… but also all teams with new head coaches. They have a combined record of 6-15. Coaches normally do not come in and win championships overnight.

Rome was not built in a day. This team, for several years, won games just based on talent. This year, coaching and talent have won. In due time, LSU football will be the kings of college football once again… and Coach Ed Orgeron will be the man to thank for it.
