LSU Tigers quarterback Joe Burrow had a historically great season in Baton Rouge in 2019.

LSU Tigers quarterback Joe Burrow is undoubtedly the top college football player in the nation.

The numbers prove it — 5,208 passing yards, 55 touchdowns with only six interceptions, 77 percent completion percentage, 311 rushing yards (and four rushing touchdowns).

Just completely ridiculous.

Not only did Burrow break records in 2019, he destroyed records.

Burrow is the first SEC quarterback to ever pass for 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in a season.

And you know what’s crazy?

No SEC quarterback had ever passed for 4,000 yards and 40 touchdowns before Burrow’s unforgettable 2019 season. He cruised right past that mark without looking back.

So what makes Burrow so good? Why is he the expected first selection in the 2020 NFL Draft?

Obviously it has a lot to do with Burrow’s physical abilities. He has the size, strength and speed to make all the plays necessary to be a high level starting NFL quarterback.

But that’s not what puts Burrow over the top.

It’s his ability to remain calm, focused and dialed in — no matter the situation.

Burrow never gets too high or too low. Even when he threw eight touchdown passes against Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl, Burrow was still focused on being better.

LSU head coach Ed Orgeron told reporters ahead of his team’s championship game matchup with Clemson “I’ve never been around a player like Joe….he’s a leader”. Coach O added that Burrow is “very focused, focused on the task at hand…it’s about execution and winning and being great”.

Burrow is the rare type of player that elevates the play of those around him. As Orgeron put it, Burrow is a perfectionist that’s never satisfied.

There are plenty of quarterbacks with the physical tools that Burrow has. Plenty of big, fast strong quarterbacks who can sling the ball down the field.

But it’s Burrow’s desire to be great — at all times — that takes his play to the next level.

He has one more chance to be great on Monday night in a LSU uniform. And it’s in the most important game of his life.

Next. Coach O is home because he did't get the job he deserved. dark

I have a feeling, though, that Burrow will be calm and focused just like he would be for any other game.
