LSU basketball beat Texas for their 8th consecutive win. Forward Trendon Watford scored 22 points, pulled down six rebounds, and dished out three assists.

The Tigers (15-4, 6-0) led 42-32 at halftime and led by as many as 16 in the second half, but Texas came roaring back and outscored LSU 35-27 in the second half, aided by 27 points from the Longhorn bench.

But LSU was able to hold on for the win.

Close Wins and Too Many Turnovers

According to sports-reference.com, of those eight straight wins, six have been decided by four points or less. And, the Tigers have committed 95 turnovers over that same span, including 16 on Saturday. It was their fourth straight game of double-digit turnovers. That lack of ball security could hurt the Tigers down the stretch if they don’t clean it up, and quick.

The schedule doesn’t get any easier from here. LSU will host the Alabama Crimson Tide on Wednesday, January 29th at the Maravich Center. The Tide is coming off a 77-74 win over Kansas State at home in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

According to rolltide.com, it was their fourth straight win and they have won 10 of their last 13. Alabama (12-7, 4-2) was led by Kira Lewis Jr., who poured in 26 points to go along with 7 rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. It was his sixth 20+ point game of the season.

As a team, the Tide leads the SEC in scoring (83.1 points/game), rebounds (41.9/game), and 3-point shooting at 35.7%. LSU is second in the conference in scoring at 80.2 points/game and is third in rebounding at 40.1, according to secsports.com.

Shades of 2018-19

The Tigers went on a similar winning streak last season, when they won 10 in a row and 11 of their last 14 down the stretch. That was the catalyst that carried LSU into the NCAA Tournament with a 28-7 record and winning a berth in the Sweet 16, losing to the #2 seeded Michigan State Spartans 80-63 in the East Regional Semifinal.

LSU wins its 8th consecutive game. Can they keep the momentum going? We shall see.
