Ed Orgeron explains what Scott Linehan’s role will be for LSU football
By Zach Ragan
LSU football replaced Joe Brady this week by hiring former NFL head coach Scott Linehan.
LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron filled a big vacancy on his staff this week by hiring Scott Linehan as the Tigers’ new passing game coordinator.
Linehan replaces Joe Brady, who left LSU in January to become the Carolina Panthers’ new offensive coordinator.
In Linehan, the Tigers are getting a coach with an impressive resumé. Linehan coached at the collegiate level for over 10 years, including stops at Washington and Louisville. He was then an offensive coordinator in the NFL for the Minnesota Vikings, Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys. Linehan was also the St Louis Rams’ head coach from 2006-08.
Orgeron commented on the hiring on Linehan on Tuesday morning on 104.5 in Baton Rouge, saying “He (Linehan) and Ensminger are going to fit great together. He brings exactly what we want for our program.”
Coach O then laid out what he’s hoping Linehan will bring to LSU’s staff.
“He (Linehan) is going to help Steve with the third down game plan and the red zone. And perhaps call some third down (plays) and red zone (plays).
Orgeron said Linehan’s “expertise” on third downs and in red zone situations is what made him stand out as a candidate.
It sounds like Coach O has a clearly defined role for Linehan. Orgeron isn’t looking to overhaul the offense with this hire, he’s just hoping to give Ensminger a coach that help LSU’s offense in crucial situations.
Linehan certainly has the experience to help the Tigers’ offense excel in the red zone and on third downs.
