LSU Football: Pair of 2020 signees will miss time this spring
By Zach Ragan
Two of LSU football’s highest rated 2020 signees will miss significant time this spring.
LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron announced on Tuesday morning that two of the Tigers’ highest rated 2020 signees will miss time this spring.
Five-star tight end Arik Gilbert and five-star cornerback Elias Ricks both had off-season surgery.
Both players are already enrolled at LSU.
Coach O said Gilbert will miss all of spring practice, while Ricks should be back by mid-spring.
Gilbert, 6-foot-5/253 lbs from Marietta, GA, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 1 tight end in the nation and the No. 5 overall 2020 player in the nation.
The Georgia native, who is projected by 247Sports to eventually be a first round NFL draft selection, wrapped up his senior season at Marietta by catching 102 passes for 1,735 yards and 14 touchdowns. Gilbert is a freakishly athletic player who can be utilized in some creative ways in LSU’s offense.
It’s obviously unfortunate that Gilbert won’t go through spring practice, but he’ll still benefit from being in team meetings and around the coaches this spring.
As for Ricks, he’s rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 2 cornerback in the nation and the No. 14 overall 2020 player in the nation. The 6-foot-2 California native has the size and athleticism to be a shutdown corner in the SEC. Ricks is also projected by 247Sports as a future first round draft pick.
Despite missing time this spring, I still think both of these players will be major factors for LSU football this upcoming season.
