LSU football’s Derek Stingley Jr will be one of the top returning players in the nation in 2020.

LSU football cornerback Derek Stingley Jr will only be a sophomore in 2020, but he’s absolutely one of the top returning players in the nation.

And that’s not just my opinion. It’s backed up by stats and the opinion of one of the top players in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who grew up rooting for LSU, said at the combine this week that Stingley was the best cornerback he faced in college, noting “I know he’s young, but that guy knows football. His technique is unbelievable”.

(Stingley allowed just one reception for 13 yards in LSU’s win against the Sooners in the College Football Playoff semifinals.)

The stats back up Lamb’s claim.

Stingley was named Pro Football Focus’ freshman of the year in 2019 after giving up just 29 receptions (on 69 targeted passes) all season.

The former five-star recruit hit his stride near the end of the year, allowing just four catches for 26 yards over the final three games of the regular season.

Stingley’s 91.9 coverage grade led all FBS cornerbacks last season. As a result, the Louisiana native was named PFF’s top returning player in 2020.

And he was just a true freshman. The sky is truly the limit for Stingley.

Next. LSU in the mix for 5-star from west coast. dark

LSU fans should feel incredibly fortunate they get to see two more seasons of Stingley in Baton Rouge. He’s only going to get better, and he should be a joy to watch in Bo Pelini’s “attacking” defense.
