Joe Burrow is already trying to influence Bengals’ personnel decisions

Former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow is expected to be selected by the Cincinnati Bengals with the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Remember when Joe Burrow didn’t want to play for the Cincinnati Bengals?

Yeah, that proved to be a completely made up narrative.

Burrow put to bed any doubt that he doesn’t want to play for the Bengals last week at the combine, telling reporters “I’ll play for whoever drafts me”.

In fact, not only will Burrow play for Cincinnati (if they end up selecting him, which they will), he’s already trying to influence the franchise’s offseason personnel decisions.

Pro Football Talk’s Peter King reported this week that Burrow “made it clear” that he wants the team to bring wide receiver AJ Green back in 2020.

Green is scheduled to be a free agent when the new league year begins, but the Bengals are reportedly expected to place the franchise tag on the veteran wide receiver.

When Green plays, he’s elite. So it’s easy to understand why Burrow would want him back in Cincinnati.

But as King noted, Green has played in only 9 of 32 games since turning 30. The former top five pick will turn 32 this summer.

While it seems like Burrow is going to play for the Bengals no matter what happens this offseason, I’m sure the team still wants him to be happy. After all, they’re not drafting Burrow to be their quarterback for the next four to five years. They’re hoping he can be a transcendent quarterback who leads the team for at least a decade.

If that means they need to bring Green back in 2020 to make him happy, that’s probably what’s going to happen.
