LSU football needs a QB transfer for depth; there’s a perfect option for the Tigers

LSU football needs some depth at the quarterback position.
LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron announced on Tuesday that backup quarterback Peter Parrish has been suspended indefinitely.
Orgeron said that Parrish hasn’t been with the team for a while and he doesn’t know when he’ll return.
With two freshman on the depth chart behind Myles Brennan, it’s clear the Tigers need some depth at quarterback.
Coach O said on Tuesday that it’s possible LSU will look for a transfer quarterback this summer, depending on how TJ Finley and Max Johnson push Brennan during spring practice.
The Tigers have three scholarship spots available.
If LSU decides to add a quarterback, I think there’s a perfect option for them.
Mississippi State senior quarterback Keytaon Thompson — a New Orleans native.
There’s just one problem.
He’s not technically available right now. But that could always change. Thompson entered the transfer portal in 2019 after the arrival of Tommy Stevens, so it’s not like he’s against the idea of leaving Mississippi State.
Thompson isn’t the type of player that would be a savior for LSU if he ended up in Baton Rouge. But he has three years of valuable experience in the SEC. He would certainly add some much needed depth to the Tigers’ quarterback room.
In three seasons at Mississippi State, Thompson has passed for 846 yards and eight touchdowns, against three interceptions. Those certainly aren’t eye-popping numbers, but it’s more experience than two true freshmen offer.
Of course, the other big question is whether or not Thompson would be immediately eligible in 2020 if he transferred. It’s unclear if he’s graduated yet from Mississippi State (or if he will by this spring/summer). He’s been a member of the SEC academic honor roll multiple times, so it’s possible he’s finished his degree early.
Another question is why Thompson would choose to leave Mississippi State, where he’s going to be behind KJ Costello, to sit behind Brennan.
I think the answer to that is simple. Thompson doesn’t have an easy path to starting anywhere in the SEC. But if he transferred to LSU for his senior season, he could be close to home and he could be a major part of a program that’s the hottest in the nation right now.
Plus, he’d still just be one snap away from seeing significant action.
I can’t imagine a better way for a Louisiana native to end a collegiate career than playing at LSU for Coach O.
