LSU Football: Recruiting analysts predict where 5-star DT will land
By Zach Ragan
LSU football is hoping to land an elite 2021 five-star defensive tackle from Louisiana.
LSU football is one of several programs pursuing 2021 five-star defensive tackle Maason Smith.
Smith, 6-foot-5/316 lbs from Houma, LA, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 1 player in the state of Louisiana and the No. 2 defensive tackle in the nation.
The Louisiana native, who also holds offers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Oklahoma (among numerous other schools), is the type of player who can anchor a defensive line.
247Sports recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks describes Smith as a versatile defender who is “strong at the point of attack” with the “tools to fit multiple roles/schemes”. Brooks also noted that Smith could be an early round NFL draft selection.
In other words, this is a player the Tigers definitely need to keep in-state.
Fortunately for LSU fans, two of the nation’s leading recruiting analysts are expecting Smith to land in Baton Rouge.
Rivals’ Chad Simmons and Sam Spiegelman recently made their predictions for Smith and they think he’ll sign with the Tigers.
Simmons and Spiegelman mentioned LSU head coach Ed Orgeron’s ability to keep elite defensive linemen in-state as the one of the main reasons they think the Tigers will sign Smith.
Smith, thanks to his unusual athleticism for a big man, has the potential to dominate games. He would be a perfect fit in Bo Pelini’s “attacking” 4-3 defense.
By the way, Smith isn’t the only elite 2021 recruit that Rivals is predicting LSU will land.
Simmons and Spiegelman also believe the Tigers will sign Kaine Williams, a four-star safety from Marrero, LA. Rivals noted that Williams is “always quick to return to Baton Rouge” and that Pelini “has Williams’ attention”.
It sounds like LSU is on the verge of landing another elite recruiting class.
