LSU football is one of several teams that’s in the mix for the nation’s top overall 2022 recruit.

LSU football, along with nearly every other elite program in the nation, is hoping they can land 2022 five-star defensive end Shemar Stewart.

Stewart, 6-foot-5/236 lbs from Opa Locka, FL, is rated by 247Sports as the No. 1 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class.

The Florida native recently told 247Sports that LSU, along with Georgia, Miami, Florida and Penn State are near the top of his list at the moment. Stewart, however, added “I’m not really trying to lean towards one side this early. I want to make the right decision.”

Stewart, who also plays basketball at Monsignor Pace, told 247Sports that LSU makes him “feel loved and welcomed”. He also discussed his relationship with Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron, saying “He thinks we can be best friends and he’s really close to the d-line. I like that.”

247Sports director of scouting Barton Simmons describes Stewart as a player with “top end combine athleticism” who “controls and sheds blocks effectively against the run”.

Simmons says Stewart could be a “power five starter with the potential to be a first round NFL Draft pick and a candidate to be a future No. 1 overall pick”.

The battle for Stewart will obviously get pretty intense over the next year. But LSU — especially with their reputation for sending players to the NFL — should be squarely in the mix to land the potentially dominant defensive end.

Coach O’s specialty is defensive linemen, which could make Baton Rouge especially attractive to Stewart.

The Tigers currently have three players committed to their 2022 recruiting class.
