Recruiting analyst ranks LSU football as most likely destination for 5-star DT
By Zach Ragan
LSU football is strongly pursuing five-star defensive tackle Maason Smith.
2021 five-star defensive tackle Maason Smith is one of the most sought after recruits in the nation and LSU football might be the favorites to land him.
Rivals national recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman recently ranked the schools most likely to land Smith, and he has LSU at the top of the list.
Here’s what Spiegelman has to say about LSU and Smith:
"The defending champions again find themselves in a good position with one of the nation’s premier defensive tackles, who resides right in their backyard. Smith got a good look at the 2020 version of the Tigers already and spoke highly of the visit from an academic standpoint. Coach Ed Orgeron has proven to Smith he’s the top priority in this class."
Smith, 6-foot-5/316 lbs from Houma, LA, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 1 player in the state of Louisiana and the No. 24 defensive tackle in the nation.
247Sports midlands region recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks describes Smith as a player who is “strong at the point of attack” and is an “active run defender who can play one gap or two thanks to motor and size”. Brooks also noted that Smith could fit “multiple roles/schemes” at the next level.
It’s hard to imagine Coach O and LSU missing out on Smith.
An elite defensive lineman leaving the state of Louisiana?
That’s just not something that happens often. Orgeron is one of the elite recruiters in college football and he loves stressing the importance of in-state players staying home. His history as a defensive line coach will also help in Smith’s recruitment.
Florida and Alabama are going to be threats to land Smith (along with Georgia and Texas A&M), but ultimately I think the dynamic defensive lineman elects to sign with the Tigers.
