LSU football could end up being a big factor for a 2021 five-star running back from Texas.

LSU football isn’t the team to beat for 2021 five-star running back Camar Wheaton, but the Tigers could still end up being a major factor in his recruitment.

Rivals recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman recently listed Texas and Oklahoma as the two schools most likely to land Wheaton.

The program he listed just behind those two?

That would be LSU.

Here’s what Spiegelman said about LSU and Wheaton:

"The Tigers were not a team oft-mentioned when it came to Wheaton at this time a year ago, but the team’s offensive success and national championship run quickly led to a January visit. LSU has always had success recruiting elite running backs to Baton Rouge and coach Ed Orgeron found one from the Dallas area in 2020. If not for the travel ban, another LSU visit might have been on tap for Wheaton. The Tigers are a team to keep an eye out for whenever visits resume."

Wheaton, 5-foot-11/190 lbs from Garland, TX, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 2 player in the state of Texas and the No. 16 overall player in the nation.

247Sports midland region recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks describes Wheaton as a “dangerous one-cut player with explosive straight-line acceleration”. Brooks added that Wheaton has “serious home run-hitting ability” and that he “displays encouraging patience to allow blocks to materialize”.

Brooks compared Wheaton to NFL running back Lamar Miller.

Wheaton told Rivals in January that he plans to sign in December during the early signing period. It sounds like he won’t announce a commitment before December.

The current recruiting shutdown certainly doesn’t help LSU — especially since the Tigers missed out on a potential visit from Wheaton. But Ed Orgeron and his staff should have plenty of time to convince the dynamic running back to come to Baton Rouge and play for LSU.

The Tigers currently have five players committed to their 2021 recruiting class. None of LSU’s current commits are running backs.
