LSU football is a team to beat for 2021 four-star safety JD Coffey.

2021 four-star safety JD Coffey revealed his top six schools on Tuesday and LSU football made the cut.

Baylor, Michigan, Oregon, Texas, and Washington were the other programs in Coffey’s top six.

Coffey, 6-foot/180 lbs from Kennedale, TX, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 31 player in the state of Texas and the No. 7 safety in the nation.

The dynamic safety told Rivals that he has the best relationships with the coaches at the schools in his top six.

Coffey said that LSU is “obviously DBU” and added that he speaks with LSU safeties coach Bill Busch on a daily basis. The Texas native noted that he has a really good relationship with Busch.

Interestingly, the reason Baylor is in Coffey’s top six isn’t just because it’s close to home. Coffey said his relationship with Bears head coach Dave Aranda, which developed while Aranda was LSU’s defensive coordinator, is a key reason why Baylor made his top six.

Coffey was hoping to commit before the start of his senior season and graduate early. But he isn’t sure at this point if that will be possible (because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic).

For now, Coffey is hoping to commit by the end of his senior season, which means his recruitment could last into November.

Whoever lands Coffey will be getting a versatile safety with college ready size. 247Sports midland regions recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks says Coffey is “capable of roaming chunks of territory as a center fielder”. Brooks also noted that Coffey “shows free safety awareness and ballhawking ability with strong safety/spacebacker frame potential”.
