Why Garrett Nussmeier delaying his commitment is good for LSU football

LSU football recruiting target Garrett Nussmeier is one of the top rated 2021 quarterbacks in the nation.
2021 four-star quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, one of LSU football’s top recruiting targets, announced on Saturday that he’s delaying his commitment until a later date.
Nussmeier was expected to commit by April 18. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic, however, forced a change in plans.
The four-star recruit, who is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 7 pro-style quarterback in the nation, told 247Sports that he wants to finish his visits — specifically to Miami, Texas and Texas A&M — before making his final decision.
It sounds like Nussmeier might have some legitimate interest in attending a school other than LSU (where he has a strong connection to Tigers passing game coordinator Scott Linehan), but it still appears that Ed Orgeron and company are the leaders for the dynamic quarterback.
Either way, the fact that Nussmeier is delaying his commitment is actually good news for LSU.
That’s because the Tigers are also heavily pursuing five-star quarterback Caleb Williams, who is rated as the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the nation and the No. 5 overall 2021 recruit (247Sports composite).
Williams should be LSU’s top 2021 recruiting target. He’s one of the most talented players in the nation. Williams has future Heisman Trophy winner potential.
While it’s unclear how Williams’ recruitment will unfold, it’s certainly possible that an early Nussmeier commitment would’ve made it easier for Williams to commit to Clemson or Oklahoma (the two biggest threats to LSU in his recruitment).
Williams had previously indicated that he was planning to commit just before his senior season. If that timeline still holds, then it could run parallel to Nussmeier’s decision.
It seems unlikely that LSU will land both quarterbacks. Nussmeier’s new timeline, however, makes it more likely that LSU will land the quarterback that’s higher on their recruiting board.
And for now, that appears to be Caleb Williams.
