Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow is the next pro sports icon
By Zach Ragan
LSU football’s Joe Burrow was the first overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft.
After all the offseason drama and rumors, the Cincinnati Bengals managed to not screw up the 2020 NFL Draft — they did the right thing and selected LSU football’s Joe Burrow with the first overall pick.
Of course, there was little doubt the Bengals would do anything but take Burrow. Cincinnati desperately needs a quarterback and Burrow was easily the best quarterback available in the draft.
Burrow will obviously have high expectations immediately. There’s been as much hype placed on him as any quarterback in the last 30 years.
Expectations, however, should be tempered. The Bengals were in a position to select Burrow because they had a terrible 2019 season. I think Burrow is going to be great (and I’ll get to that in a minute), but I’m not sure there’s a single player on the planet that could immediately turn Cincinnati into a contender.
BUT.
And stay with me here.
The Bengals WILL eventually be a contender with Burrow under center. It might take a bit of time (just ask Peyton Manning and the Colts), but it’s going to happen.
That’s because I think Burrow is going to be the next NFL icon. He’s going to be the most popular player in the league in short order.
Look, there’s an obvious opening for that spot with Tom Brady’s career winding down.
And Burrow is the perfect candidate to fill that role.
Burrow has the on-the-field skills. He has the elite leadership ability (which is what has truly made Brady elite over the years) and he’s an amazing teammate. Burrow makes everyone around him better and he’s brimming with confidence. No one believes in Joe Burrow more than Joe Burrow. And if you don’t believe in yourself, how can you expect anyone else to believe?
The numbers from Burrow in 2019 were obviously impressive. But I believe Burrow’s on the verge of being a pro sports icon not just because of the numbers, but also because of the way he carries himself on and off the field.
Roger Goodell and the NFL might as well start centering their marketing campaigns around Burrow, because this is the player that’s going to lead the league into the new decade.
And he’s going to be representing LSU all along the way.
