LSU football: Tigers have a good shot at landing 5-star CB
By Zach Ragan
LSU football is one of the programs hoping to land a commitment from five-star defensive back Ga’Quincy McKinstry.
2021 five-star cornerback Ga’Quincy McKinstry recently named his top five schools and he included LSU football, along with Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and Georgia.
McKinstry, 5-foot-11/172 lbs from Pinson, AL, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 2 player in the state of Alabama and the No. 2 cornerback in the nation. He’s also rated as the No. 23 overall 2021 recruit in the nation.
247Sports recruiting analyst Steve Wiltfong discussed McKinstry and his recruitment this week and suggested that Alabama and LSU are the favorites to land the elite cornerback.
I could see how a lot of folks would assume that Alabama would be the team to beat for McKinstry. But for now, it doesn’t appear there’s frontrunner among McKinstry’s perceived top two.
Which means LSU is legitimate threat to land the Alabama native.
“I think LSU has put themselves in a really strong position here with what they have done in developing players at the position,” said Wiltfong.
Wiltfong added “I think it is still a toss up for McKinstry after talking with his family this week. I think he is still going through the process”.
Something else interesting that Wiltfong noted is that McKinstry, who doesn’t have a set commitment date, is hoping to also play basketball at the next level, which means LSU head basketball coach Will Wade will likely be involved in his recruitment.
It sounds like this battle could go all the way to signing day.
But it will be worth it for whichever program lands McKinstry, because they’ll be getting a player described by 247Sports national writer Charles Power as a defensive back who “has elite ball skills as a corner and would also be a top prospect as a receiver if he wanted”.
