LSU football will take a different recruiting approach even after the pandemic is over
By Zach Ragan
LSU football has found a better way to do things during the coronavirus pandemic.
LSU football, along with every other program in the nation, has been forced to quickly adapt to a new way of recruiting during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Because of the pandemic, there’s been no visits, camps or in-person evaluations. It’s been all phone calls, texts, FaceTime calls and Zoom meetings.
The bulk of those things were already happening — except the Zoom meetings.
With Zoom meetings, coaching staffs are able to get more people on a call. They can recruit the whole family, regardless of where everyone’s located.
Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron said this week that the Zoom meetings will remain a staple of LSU’s recruiting approach, even after “normal” recruiting resumes (hopefully soon, though the NCAA recently extended the recruiting shutdown through June 30).
“Zoom meetings. They’ve made us closer. It’s a lot better than just talking on the phone or texting. It’s even better than FaceTime because you can have the whole family in the meeting. It feels like it’s a living room,” said Orgeron during a recent appearance on 104.5 ESPN Baton Rouge.
Another recruiting edge for LSU
Leave it to Coach O to figure out a better way to recruit during a pandemic.
I don’t think there’s a coach in America that is more comfortable in a living room than Orgeron. His genuineness is undeniable. Parents almost always love Orgeron. And he can thrive in nearly every environment.
But unfortunately for Coach O, he’s only allowed one in-home visit per recruit.
However, with Zoom calls, it’s almost like Coach O has an unlimited amount of in-home visits.
That’s bad news for the rest of the SEC.
The last thing LSU needs is another recruiting edge. But I’m sure the Tigers will take it.
