LSU football is working to bolster their 2021 recruiting class.

Earlier this month, 2021 four-star quarterback Garrett Nussmeier committed to LSU football.

Nussmeier, 6-foot-2/182 lbs from Flower Mound, TX, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 8 pro-style quarterback in the nation.

The Tigers were also strongly pursuing five-star quarterback Caleb Williams, but it certainly appears they were more enamored with Nussmeier.

Maybe that’s because Nussmeier is already familiar with LSU passing game coordinator Scott Linehan (Nussmeier’s dad coached with Linehan in the NFL).

If the Tigers are all in on Nussmeier as their quarterback of the future, then they need to do what they can to land four-star wide receiver J. Michael Sturdivant, 6-foot-2/183 lbs.

Sturdivant is high school teammates with Nussmeier…..and he recently had some high praise for the four-star quarterback.

“Garrett is the best quarterback I’ve ever played with and following him to LSU — our connection wouldn’t miss a beat. We could make plays on an even bigger stage,” said Sturdivant to Rivals this week.

Sturdivant caught 87 passes for 1,125 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2019, so it’s clear the two have a great connection. And it would be fun to see that connection continue in Baton Rouge.

Can LSU land Sturdivant?

The Texas native revealed his top four schools this week and included LSU, along with California, Oklahoma and UCLA.

Sturdivant told Rivals that the “coaching staff (at LSU) makes it feel like home”. He added “they’re really good people, they make it comfortable and easy to talk to and they have a history of developing receivers and getting them to the league”.

I’m sure seeing Justin Jefferson get selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and then knowing that Ja’Marr Chase could be a top five pick next year, has a lot of top wide receivers taking notice of LSU.

I think the Tigers should have a pretty good shot here. Sturdivant sounds like a big Nussmeier fan. And LSU recruits incredibly well in Texas. Everything lines up for the Tigers to be the team to beat here.

Sturdivant is hoping to commit before his senior season begins.
