LSU football the favorites to land elite 2021 offensive lineman
By Zach Ragan
LSU football appears to be the program to beat for one of the nation’s top-rated offensive linemen.
2021 offensive lineman Garrett Dellinger is one of the top recruits in the nation and LSU football appears to be the program to beat for his commitment.
Dellinger, 6-foot-6/280 lbs from Clarkston, MI (Clarkston), is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 5 player in the state of Michigan and the No. 12 offensive tackle in the nation. He’s also rated as the No. 76 overall 2021 recruit in the nation.
Rivals recruiting analyst Josh Helmholdt recently ranked the contenders for Dellinger and he has the Tigers as the most likely program to land the elite offensive tackle.
Helmholdt noted that the other programs in the mix for Dellinger (Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State) don’t feel very confident about landing the Mississippi native.
“The majority of the buzz in this recruitment since the start of the current dead period has been in LSU’s favor,” said Helmholdt.
The Rivals recruiting analyst added, “that buzz is due to the confidence in Baton Rouge that the Tigers are in the driver’s seat, and the comparative lesser confidence emanating from the campuses of the other three contenders”.
What would LSU football be getting in Dellinger?
247Sports national recruiting analyst Allen Trieu notes that Dellinger is a very good athlete who has played basketball since his freshman season in high school.
Trieu says Dellinger plays tough and gets off the ball with good pad level” and is a “high-level prospect with great physical tools”.
Dellinger can play at either guard or tackle, but he projects better at tackle at the collegiate level (that’s where the athleticism comes into play).
The NFL comparison for Dellinger (via 247Sports) is Jack Conklin, a former top 10 NFL draft pick who was an All-Pro in 2016 for the Tennessee Titans (Conklin also played basketball in high school).
Dellinger doesn’t currently have a planned commitment date.
The Tigers have 12 players committed to their 2021 recruiting class.
