LSU Football: Tigers working to become “Tight End U”
By Zach Ragan
LSU football is turning into a factory for NFL talent.
LSU football is already “defensive back U”.
And they’re turning into “wide receiver U”.
Could “tight end U” be next?
LSU had two tight ends from their 2019 national championship squad land in the NFL in April (Stephen Sullivan was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks and Thaddeus Moss signed with the Washington Redskins).
And in a few years, five-star Tigers signee Arik Gilbert will likely be a first-round pick (if he lives up to the hype).
There might be another elite LSU tight end right behind Gilbert heading to the NFL.
LSU football in the mix for another elite tight end
2021 four-star tight end Thomas Fidone, 6-foot-5/225 lbs from Council Bluffs, IA (Lewis Central), is rated by 247Sports as the No. 1 tight end in the nation and the No. 1 player in the state of Iowa.
And LSU is a major threat to land him.
247Sports reported this week that LSU “has joined a top group of Iowa, Nebraska and Michigan” for Fidone. They also reported that LSU and Nebraska are the teams to “watch out for headed into the summer”.
The Iowa native hasn’t visited Baton Rouge yet, which is actually good news for the Tigers.
As 247Sports pointed out, if LSU is strongly in the mix without a visit, then they should be in an even better spot once Fidone is able to take some visits (after July 31 would be the earliest he could take visits, as of now).
Fidone, who also plays basketball, doesn’t plan to make a decision before he can take some visits.
If LSU is able to land the four-star tight end, they’d be getting a player described by 247Sports national recruiting analyst Allen Trieu as a “new age tight end who will be able to play in any system in many different spots in different formations”.
LSU currently has 12 players committed to its 2021 recruiting class. The Tigers don’t have a tight end currently committed.
