LSU Football: Myles Brennan ranked in middle of pack of SEC QBs
By Zach Ragan
LSU football’s Myles Brennan has a lot to prove in 2020.
No one should envy LSU football quarterback Myles Brennan.
That’s because Brennan has to take over in 2020 for Joe Burrow, possibly the greatest college football quarterback of all time.
Brennan could have a tremendous redshirt junior season in 2020 and still fall way short of what Burrow accomplished in 2019.
I can already hear the national analysts downplaying Brennan’s numbers regardless of what happens next season.
If Brennan tosses for 4,500 yards and 40 touchdowns?
Cool. It’s not 5,671 yards or 60 touchdowns.
(Insert eye roll emoji here.)
I can’t imagine the pressure that Brennan feels heading into next season. Fortunately for him, though, Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron has made it clear that no one is expecting Brennan to be Burrow. They’re only expecting him to be the best Myles Brennan he can be.
But how good can he be?
No one knows. And for now, major sports publications are being conservative with their expectations.
A fair ranking for LSU football’s Myles Brennan?
Lindy’s sports recently unveiled their quarterback rankings for 2020 and they have Brennan as the No. 22 best quarterback in the nation. They have him as No. 6 in the SEC (behind Jamie Newman, Kyle Trask, Kellen Mond, KJ Costello, and Bo Nix).
My gut says Brennan will be better than No. 6 in the SEC. He has a tremendous arm, he learned from Burrow for two years and he’s received plenty of praise this offseason from Coach O and offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger.
But I can understand why Lindy’s, along with others, are hesitant to put Brennan higher in their rankings.
The Mississippi native still has to prove he can be a starting quarterback in the SEC. And until that happens this fall, it’s all speculation.
Brennan has the toolset to be great in the SEC. He just has to show everyone he knows how to use that toolset.
