LSU football has an embarrassment of riches at the cornerback position.

LSU football‘s Derek Stingley Jr isn’t just the best cornerback in the nation — he may be the best player in the nation.

Stingley took the college football world by storm in 2019. As a true freshman last season, Stingley led the nation with a 91.9 coverage grade (via Pro Football Focus). He also allowed just a 38 percent catch rate.

Those numbers would be completely insane for a veteran. They’re even more insane for a true freshman.

And Stingley is only going to get better from here.

That’s not good news for the rest of the SEC.

Also not good news for opposing SEC programs is the fact that LSU has another young, potentially dominant cornerback on the way.

Five-star signee Elias Ricks is poised to be an important part of the Tigers’ defense in 2020 and beyond.

Ricks, who enrolled at LSU in January, is already impressing the Tigers’ coaching staff according to 247Sports.

“He’s really hit a groove,” said 247Sports’ Shea Dixon of Ricks.

It’s doubtful that Ricks (or anyone for that matter) will be as good as Stingley, but he still has the potential to be an elite player for LSU.

It’s a perfect situation for LSU football

The Tigers actually have a dream scenario at cornerback right now.

The best way for a player to get better is to be on the same team as an already dominant player. That’s the situation now with Ricks and Stingley.

Ricks will be able to learn from the best cornerback in the nation for the next two years.

The California native, who prefers to go by Eli according to the official LSU sports website, will undoubtedly be a better player because of his time with Stingley.

A lot of programs might claim to be “defensive back U”, but I don’t think there’s any doubt that the real “DBU” resides in Baton Rouge.
