LSU Football: Tigers on the verge of landing best WR class in the nation
By Zach Ragan
There’s no doubt anymore that LSU football is “wide receiver U”.
On Friday, LSU football added a commitment from 2021 four-star wide receiver Chris Hilton, a Louisiana native who is rated as the No. 8 wide receiver in the nation.
Hilton is the third wide receiver in the Tigers’ 2021 recruiting class, joining four-star JoJo Earle (the No. 12 wide receiver in the nation) and four-star Deion Smith (the No. 13 wide receiver in the nation).
That’s an extremely impressive haul for LSU.
And the Tigers probably aren’t done yet (insert multiple eyeball emojis here).
More wide receiver talent on the way for LSU football?
LSU’s top wide receiver target, four-star Brian Thomas, is still uncommitted. But there’s a strong feeling that Thomas will end up in Baton Rouge.
Thomas, 6-foot-4/185 lbs from Walker, LA (Walker), is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 3 player in the state of Louisiana and the No. 7 wide receiver in the nation.
The Louisiana native, who is also a standout basketball player, is a wide receiver with great ball skills in traffic. 247Sports national writer Charles Power says Thomas is dangerous after the catch and in the quick game in addition to his possession skills”.
Power compares Thomas to New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas, who just set the NFL record for receptions in a season (149).
Rivals recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman recently suggested that the battle for Thomas is between Alabama and LSU.
While Alabama is certainly a legitimate threat here, I’d be very surprised if the Tigers didn’t land Thomas. The pull of playing in-state and close to home is just too strong.
Plus, LSU is turning into the premier destination for wide receivers. Justin Jefferson was a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and Ja’Marr Chase will likely be a top-five selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.
If you’re a top wide receiver in Louisiana, why would you want to go anywhere else?
