LSU football could be a big threat to land one of the nation’s best inside linebackers.

2021 four-star linebacker Greg Penn, one of LSU football‘s top recruiting targets, recently announced that he’ll be committing on July 12.

The feeling of late has been that Penn, 6-foot-1/225 lbs from Hyattsville, MD (DeMatha Catholic), will commit to Maryland.

But that might not necessarily be the case.

In fact, LSU might be the team to beat for Penn.

Billy Embody, who covers the Tigers for 247Sports, recently updated Penn’s recruitment and he thinks LSU could actually be in the driver’s seat.

“While he’s yet to visit LSU, the Tigers have chipped away here and there’s some confidence on LSU’s side that LSU could pull this off,” wrote Embody.

The 247Sports writer also noted that Tigers defensive coordinator Bo Pelini is a big fan of Penn.

That fandom appears to go both ways.

Penn recently said LSU is “LBU”, noting the Tigers’ ability to get linebackers to the next level.

“LSU is LBU in my opinion. They have been getting their linebackers to the next level and that’s my goal,” said Penn to 247Sports.

Penn would be a great addition for LSU football

Penn is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 10 player in the state of Maryland and the No. 9 inside linebacker in the nation.

247Sports national recruiting analyst Brian Dohn describes Penn as a “downhill player who tackles through the ballcarrier”. Dohn also says that Penn “has [the] speed to run to sideline” and is “physical and instinctive against [the] run”.

Dohn compares Penn to former Stanford linebacker Blake Martinez, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers (he now plays for the New York Giants).

Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas A&M are also in the mix to land Penn.
