There’s an in-state player that LSU football needs to offer soon.

2022 cornerback Laterrance Welch is shaping up to be one of the best defensive backs in the nation and he doesn’t have an offer yet from LSU football.

Welch, 6-foot-1/180 lbs from Lafayette, LA (Acadiana), hasn’t been rated yet by the major recruiting services. But some top programs already have him on their radar.

In fact, Welch has offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Tennessee, among several others.

At this point, I think it’s clear that Welch is a player that LSU will be targeting. So why wait to offer?

Why hasn’t LSU football offered?

Perhaps one thing that’s holding the Tigers back from extending an early offer is that the 2020 recruiting cycle is ripe with talent in Louisiana. It’s quite possible that LSU wants to do their due diligence on their own, instead of simply offering a player because other programs have.

But at the same time, I don’t see the harm in offering now. We all know that offers aren’t binding. Programs hand out way more offers than they have spots available. It’s almost comical in a sense.

The Tigers should go ahead and start building a strong relationship with Welch, who happens to be from the same area as LSU defensive backs coach Corey Raymond.

The absolute worst thing that could happen here is Welch develops into an elite prospect and lands at Alabama because he has a stronger connection with the Crimson Tide.

Rivals reported this week that LSU has “kept tabs” on Welch. It’s clear he’s on their radar, but the Tigers need to ramp up their pursuit of the talented defensive back.
