LSU Football: Tigers among top schools for elite cornerback
By Zach Ragan
LSU football is in the mix to land one of the nation’s top-rated 2021 cornerbacks.
2021 five-star cornerback Ga’Quincy McKinstry revealed his top three schools this week and LSU football made the cut, along with Alabama and Auburn.
McKinstry, 6-foot-1/175 lbs from Pinson, AL (Pinson Valley), is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 1 player in the state of Alabama and the No. 2 cornerback in the nation. He’s also rated as the No. 23 overall 2021 recruit in the nation.
The dynamic safety told Rivals that Alabama and Auburn have been recruiting him “a little harder” than LSU. McKinstry, however, noted that he has been talking with LSU and has a good relationship with the staff.
McKinstry is hoping to play basketball in college as well. According to Rivals, he’ll have the option to play basketball at each of his top three schools (the Alabama native has been in contact with the basketball coaches at each program).
“Playing basketball is important to me as well, so that will be part of the decision,” said McKinstry.
For now, McKinstry doesn’t have a timeline for his decision, saying” I really don’t know when I will be ready to commit. I am just going to do it when I feel I am ready. It could go into the season or it could happen before.”
What would LSU football get in McKinstry?
Unsurprisingly, McKinstry is an extremely athletic defensive back (there’s a reason coaches love two-sport athletes). 247Sports national writer Charles Power describes McKinstry as a player that “has elite ball skills as a corner and would also be a top prospect as a receiver if he wanted”.
Power also notes that McKinstry “makes difficult plays at a high rate and finds multiple ways to affect the game” and “impresses with his competitive nature”.
LSU currently has 16 commits to its 2021 recruiting class.
