LSU Football: Tigers promising something other programs can’t to recruits
By Zach Ragan
LSU football has a selling point that few programs have.
LSU football is already a recruiting juggernaut, simply based on the history and location of the program.
Not only do the Tigers have great tradition, but they also own the talent-rich state of Louisiana. It’s not like LSU and head coach Ed Orgeron (who has always had a reputation for being a great recruiter) necessarily need any help on the recruiting front.
So it’s probably not good news for the rest of college football that the Tigers can promise something to recruits that most other programs can’t.
Championships.
Sure, plenty of programs can promise the opportunity to “compete” for championships. But LSU has already won a championship under Coach O. They don’t need to promise a vision, they can simply direct recruits to the film of the 2019 season.
And that’s exactly what the Tigers are doing.
2022 four-star defensive tackle Keithian Alexander recently spoke to Rivals about his recruitment and he discussed LSU’s recruiting pitch.
“They call me every day and they’re hyped up…He (Coach Ed Orgeron) talks a little country and says he’s ready to get a ring on my finger”, said Alexander.
Coming from most coaches, the “ring on my finger” talk would be a bunch of fluff. But it has some substance coming from Orgeron, who just led the Tigers to arguably the greatest season in college football history.
It has to be hard for opposing programs (outside of Alabama) to win a recruiting battle against LSU when the Tigers can easily say “why go somewhere that hasn’t proved they can win a championship”.
LSU football’s recruiting is heating up
The Tigers’ 2021 recruiting class started the spring ranked around No. 10-15 in the nation (depending on which recruiting service you prefer). But over the last couple of months, we’ve seen LSU’s class steadily climb the rankings.
Currently, the Tigers have the No. 4 ranked class in the nation with 16 commits.
This is a year where LSU has a legitimate shot to finish with the top-ranked class in the nation. That’s because they have several highly-rated players still on their recruiting board, including five-star defensive linemen Korey Foreman and Maason Smith and four-star wide receiver Brian Thomas, among several others.
(LSU is the overwhelming favorite to land Smith and Thomas.)
The Tigers are about to show everyone that the 2019 season was far from a fluke.
