LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron is one of the best recruiters in the nation.

LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron has a tremendous reputation as a recruiter, dating back to his days as an assistant at Miami and USC.

The secret to Coach O’s success is his relatability. He’s a genuine coach who is down to earth. And he’s approachable.

A lot of head coaches aren’t approachable. They’re often viewed as celebrities, which can be intimidating for recruits.

But that’s not the case with Orgeron. He’d just as soon be coaching football and talking with future players.

Speaking of talking with future players, what exactly does Coach O talk about with players during the recruiting process (aside from football, of course)?

Thanks to 2022 four-star linebacker Harold Perkins, we have the answer.

Ed Orgeron’s favorite non-football subject

When it comes to recruiting, the most important thing a head coach can do is build a great relationship with a prospect. That’s accomplished by being genuine, which is a perfect description of Coach O.

One way Orgeron shows his genuineness is by talking to players about real-life stuff, whether it’s family, friends, or school.

Or Coach O’s favorite non-football subject — food.

“Coach O is funny, man. He’s always talking about eating. I like Coach O. He’s got a good personality,” said Perkins recently to 247Sports.

This shouldn’t be much of a surprise — Orgeron has never been shy about his affinity for gumbo and crawfish.

In fact, it was 15 lbs of crawfish that helped bring Joe Burrow to Baton Rouge (ok, maybe it wasn’t just crawfish, but crawfish definitely played a role….maybe).

At the end of the day, Orgeron recruits well because he’s real. There’s no show. There’s no fakeness, it’s just Coach O being himself.
