LSU Football: How Garrett Nussmeier stacked up against top QB in nation
By Zach Ragan
LSU football received a commitment from four-star quarterback Garrett Nussmeier in early May.
When LSU football received a commitment from four-star quarterback Garrett Nussmeier in early May, it essentially knocked the Tigers out of the running for five-star quarterback Caleb Williams.
Williams, who eventually committed to Oklahoma, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the nation and the No. 4 overall 2021 recruit in the nation.
Nussmeier, on the flip side, is rated as the No. 8 pro-style quarterback in the nation and the No. 107 2021 recruit in the nation.
Williams obviously has a bit more hype surrounding him, but it’s clear that LSU preferred Nussmeier. If the Tigers had Williams higher on their board, then they wouldn’t have taken a commitment from Nussmeier while Williams was still uncommitted.
Of course, the obvious question now for LSU fans is how Nussmeier compares to Williams.
Well, thanks to the recent QB Collective in the Indianapolis area we have some insight.
Did LSU football make the right choice?
Nussmeier, Williams and various other top-rated quarterback recruits (including five-star quarterback Drake Maye, a North Carolina commit) competed over the weekend at the QB Collective.
According to 247Sports, Maye and Williams lived up to the hype of their high ratings. But Nussmeier wasn’t far behind.
In fact, QB Collective coach Will Hewlett suggested that Nussmeier pushed Williams and Maye from a consistency standpoint.
"Hewlett described Nussmeier as explosive regarding both his arm talent and movements. The future Tiger at the very least pushed Williams and Maye from a consistency standpoint, and was on the money just about every rep. Nussmeier came out strong from the first throw and never looked back and his performance was as strong as anyone’s this weekend in the Hoosier State."
The recruiting services do a really good job of rating players. And they get it right for the most part.
But ultimately, coaches rely on their own evaluations. LSU loved what they saw from Nussmeier in their evaluations. And they clearly think he’s the best fit to run the Tigers’ offense in the future.
And that’s why Nussmeier will be spending his college career in Baton Rouge.
