LSU Football: Tigers among top schools for elite 5-star recruit
By Zach Ragan
LSU football made the top three for an elite five-star recruit.
2021 five-star running back Camar Wheaton revealed his top three schools on Tuesday morning and LSU football made the cut, along with Alabama and Oklahoma.
Wheaton, 6-foot-1/190 lbs from Garland, TX (Lakeview Centennial), is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 2 player in the state of Texas and the No. 2 running back in the nation. He’s also rated as the No. 18 overall 2021 recruit in the nation.
SMU and Texas were the programs eliminated from Wheaton’s previous list of top programs.
Wheaton discussed his recruitment with Rivals last month and he was a bit vague when discussing his interest in LSU.
“They’re (LSU) really just checking on me and also seeing where I was in the process. They let me be in the driver’s seat,” said Wheaton.
It’s hard to glean much from that sentence, but that’s how it goes in recruiting at times.
Oklahoma appears to be the favorite here, but LSU is at least hanging in the mix.
However, with visits unlikely to happen this year, it could be tough for the Tigers to beat out the Sooners for Wheaton’s commitment.
What Wheaton would bring to LSU football
Wheaton is undoubtedly one of the best 2021 offensive recruits in the nation.
247Sports midland region recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks describes Wheaton as a “big-play back with outstanding top-end speed verified in track environment”.
Brooks also notes that Wheaton “displays enough agility in the hole to make an initial move to make first defender miss” and is an “open-field galloper who won’t get run down from behind”.
The Tigers currently have 16 players committed to their 2021 recruiting class, including four-star running back Corey Kiner, who is rated as the No. 8 running back in the nation.
