An LSU football true freshman could be in store for a special season.

By now everyone is aware that the hype for LSU football‘s Arik Gilbert is reaching insane levels.

Gilbert, a Georgia native who signed with the Tigers as a five-star recruit in the 2020 class, was rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 5 overall recruit in the nation.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that Gilbert is already excelling in Baton Rouge.

“He’s (Gilbert) the type of tight end we’ve been looking for, he can stretch the field. We want him to learn to [play] the tight end position first then we may move him to the slot or outside,” said Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron this week (via Tiger Details).

Gilbert is obviously a special talent. But just how special can he be?

Well, one analyst believes the LSU true freshman will be the “toast of college football” by the end of the season.

Analyst loves LSU football’s Arik Gilbert

247Sports national recruiting analyst Barton Simmons recently took some time to discuss various college football players and how they’ll fare in 2020.

Gilbert is a player that Power is expecting to see a lot from. In fact, Simmons thinks Gilbert will be the player everyone is talking about by the end of the season.

247Sports writer Charles Power asked Simmons which true freshman would be the toast of college football by the end of the year and Gilbert was the answer.

“He is as equipped to dominate as a freshman as anyone in the country and he’s playing in an offense that will be looking for additional playmakers,” wrote Simmons. “The reviews have been as expected so it’s pretty easy for me to envision LSU winning some big game in October and Gilbert’s stat line looks something like 12 catches for 115 yards and two scores. The dude is a specimen.”

It’s not like Simmons is going out on a limb — I think nearly everyone expects Gilbert to have big numbers as a freshman. But sometimes the obvious answer is the correct answer.

And that’s the case here.
